This month marks one year since I opened the doors to my counselling practice in Rayleigh, and it feels both unbelievable and deeply rewarding to look back on everything that has unfolded in that time. What a journey it has been. Full of learning, courage and so much gratitude.
When I first started out, I hoped to create a safe and compassionate space for people to explore their thoughts, feelings and experiences. What I didn’t expect was just how much I would grow alongside my clients. Every person who has chosen to sit with me, to share their story and to trust me with their inner world, has become part of this journey. For that, I am endlessly thankful.
Starting My Private Counselling Practice: The Early Days
Starting in private practice was both exciting and overwhelming. There was so much to figure out, from the physical setup of my counselling room to the endless paperwork and systems that keep everything running smoothly. I remember spending hours trying to find the right balance of comfort and professionalism, from choosing the right chairs to deciding on the smallest details that would help clients feel safe and at ease.
And then came the practical side of building a business. Learning about directories, designing a website, finding the right words to describe what I offer and taking the leap into social media. Each small step felt significant. I still remember the nerves of posting for the first time, wondering if anyone would read it or care. To everyone who has ever liked, shared or commented on my posts, please know that your support made a real difference. Every bit of encouragement helped others find their way to me and helped me find my confidence.
Navigating the Emotions of Private Practice: From Nerves to Growth
Of course, the emotional journey of this first year has been just as big as the practical one. I can still remember the nerves of meeting my very first clients under my own roof, wondering if I would be enough, if I really belonged in this role but mostly, if I could actually do this on my own or would I be better at an already established and supported practice. Anxiety and imposter syndrome were familiar companions at the start, whispering doubts and testing my sense of self.
But then something beautiful began to happen. Clients returned. The trust between us deepened. I watched people begin to make sense of their stories, to find new ways of understanding themselves and to move toward healing. In those moments, my nerves softened into gratitude. I learned that counselling isn’t about having all the answers. It’s about being present, listening deeply and holding space for whatever needs to emerge.

Learning and Growing Through Counselling
This first year has been a year of learning in every possible sense. I’ve continued my professional development and learned so much from fellow therapists who have been generous with their time and wisdom, but I’ve also learned profoundly from my clients.
Each person I’ve worked with has taught me something about resilience, courage and the power of vulnerability. I’ve witnessed moments of clarity, of hope, of quiet strength that have reminded me again and again why this work matters. The therapeutic relationship is never one-sided. I might offer guidance and support, but I am always learning too.
A Heartfelt Thank You
So, as I celebrate this first anniversary, I want to say a heartfelt thank you.
To my clients: thank you for your willingness, honesty and trust. Thank you for allowing me to walk beside you, even for a short part of your journey. It is an honour and a privilege to witness your growth and healing.
To everyone who has supported me in other ways, whether by sharing my posts, offering advice, cheering me on or simply believing in what I do, your support has meant the world. You’ve helped me reach the people who needed to find me and reminded me that I’m not doing this alone.
Starting and sustaining a private practice has been one of the most challenging and rewarding experiences of my life. It has stretched me, grounded me and filled me with gratitude every single day.
Here’s to continuing to learn, grow and connect in the years ahead. Again, thank you for being part of this first chapter.
