FAQs

What is counselling?

Counselling is a supportive and confidential process that helps individuals explore their thoughts, feelings and behaviours in a safe environment and express themselves without judgement. A trained counsellor listens empathetically and guides you in understanding your experiences, helping you find clarity and develop coping strategies. The goal is to empower you to make positive changes, improve your emotional well-being, and enhance your overall quality of life. Remember, seeking help is a sign of strength, and everyone deserves the chance to be heard and supported.

What counselling is not.

Counselling is often surrounded by misconceptions, so let’s clarify what it is not! First and foremost, counselling is not about giving advice or telling you what to do. It is also not a quick fix for problems. Additionally, it’s not the same as chatting with a friend; while friends may provide support, a counsellor brings expertise and tools to help you navigate challenges more effectively. Finally, counselling is not about blaming or digging up your past for the sake of it. Rather, counselling is a supportive space where you can explore your emotions and experiences with a trained professional. It is a process that takes time and involves self-reflection and personal growth.

Counselling, where to start?

Starting the journey into counselling can feel a bit overwhelming, but it’s an incredibly positive step toward understanding yourself better and finding support in difficult times. First, take a moment to reflect on both what you’re dealing with (e.g. anxiety, relationship issues, or perhaps just seeking personal growth) and what you’re hoping to achieve through counselling. Next, consider the type of counsellor you might connect with best – there are many approaches to therapy and you can find a bit more information on this here. Please don’t hesitate to reach out if you have any questions and if you’d like to know if Argyle Counselling would be a good fit for you you can book a free consultation via our contact page without any pressure to commit.

Remember, it’s perfectly normal to feel unsure at first. Take your time, trust your instincts, and know that seeking help is a brave and empowering decision.

Who does counselling help?

Counselling can be a valuable resource for anyone looking to navigate the complexities of life. It’s designed to support individuals facing a wide range of challenges, whether they’re struggling with anxiety, depression, relationship issues, or life transitions. If you’re feeling overwhelmed, unsure, or just in need of someone to talk to, counselling can help you gain clarity and perspective. It’s not just for those in crisis; many people seek counselling for personal growth, improved self-esteem, or to enhance their communication skills. From teenagers dealing with school pressures to adults facing career challenges, counselling provides a safe space for exploration and healing. Even if you’re not experiencing any specific issues, counselling can be a proactive way to boost your mental well-being and develop coping strategies for the future.

Can counselling help with anxiety?

Absolutely, counselling can be incredibly helpful for managing anxiety! If you’ve been feeling overwhelmed by worry or fear, talking to a trained professional can provide the support you need. Counsellors create a safe and welcoming space where you can freely express your thoughts and feelings. They can help you understand the roots of your anxiety and develop coping strategies tailored just for you. Through various therapeutic techniques, such as Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), counselling can empower you to challenge negative thoughts and embrace more positive patterns. Plus, having someone who listens and understands can make a world of difference.

Will counselling help depression?

Counselling can be a great tool for managing depression. In addition to providing a safe and supportive environment where you can openly express your feelings and thoughts, a counsellor can also help you explore the underlying causes of your depression, offer coping strategies, and work with you to develop new ways of thinking about your experiences. Using therapeutic approaches like Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), you can learn to challenge negative thoughts and break free from patterns that may be contributing to your feelings of sadness. Simply having someone to talk to can alleviate the sense of isolation that often accompanies depression.

Remember, it’s perfectly okay to seek help. You’re not alone on this journey, and many people find that counselling leads to significant improvements in their mood and overall well-being.

Will counselling help my relationship?

Counselling can be a wonderful resource for your relationship! It offers a safe space for you to express your feelings and concerns with the guidance of a trained professional. Sometimes, we all need a little help to navigate the complexities of love and communication. Counselling can help you understand yourself better, explore underlying issues, and develop healthier ways of connecting. It encourages open dialogue, which can lead to greater empathy and understanding between you and your partner. Even if your relationship seems strong, counselling can provide tools to enhance your bond and deepen your connection.

Can counselling make you feel worse?

Sometimes, yes. During sessions, you may discuss past traumas or challenges that can initially feel overwhelming. It’s normal to experience heightened emotions as you delve into sensitive topics. However, consider this: counselling is a safe space designed for exploration and healing. While some moments might be uncomfortable, they often lead to greater understanding and growth. The struggles you feel during sessions can be a part of the healing process, helping you to uncover and address issues that you may not have confronted before. An effective counsellor will guide you through these feelings, providing support and strategies to navigate them. If you ever feel too overwhelmed, it’s important to communicate with your counsellor, who can adjust their approach to suit your needs. You’re not alone in this, and with patience and support, many find that counselling ultimately leads to a brighter path.
