Face-to-Face vs. Online Counselling: Pros and Cons

In today’s fast-paced world, many of us find ourselves navigating stress, anxiety, and personal challenges. Seeking support is a positive step, and when it comes to counselling, we face the choice between face-to-face sessions and online counselling. So, which do we choose? Well, each approach has its own merits and drawbacks, and with no two clients being the same, it really comes down to personal preference and individual needs. Let’s explore these options together to see which might suit you best.

The Comfort of Face-to-Face Counselling

When we think of traditional counselling, the picture of a comfortable room with soft lighting and a welcoming therapist often comes to mind. Here are some reasons why face-to-face counselling can be beneficial:

1. Personal Connection: One of the most significant benefits of in-person sessions is the ability to establish a personal connection with your counsellor. When meeting in person, the counsellor is more easily able to pick up on non-verbal cues like facial expressions and body language, and bring to focus any inconsistencies. Attention to such nuances encourages a greater sense of trust and empathy between counsellor and client.

2. Focused Environment: A counsellor’s room is a space created with the client in mind – welcoming, safe and private. It offers an atmosphere that can help you open up and engage more effectively in the session. Here there are fewer distractions than at home, allowing the focus to stay on your concerns, and it’s a space without risk of being overheard.

3. Immediate Support: In a face-to-face setting, when experiencing an emotionally heavier session you can receive immediate support, whether sharing a laugh, having a moment of vulnerability or doing some grounding exercises together, being physically present can provide comfort that’s hard to replicate online.

However, while face-to-face counselling has its perks, there are also some considerations to keep in mind.

1. Travel and Scheduling: When choosing a counsellor you need to think about their location, how you will get there, and other responsibilities that you will need to schedule around like work, family, etc. Having to navigate these might feel a little overwhelming and deter you from seeking counselling.

2. Less Flexibility: Life isn’t always predictable, sometimes we are thrown a curveball and find ourselves in need of a little flexibility. Often at times like this, attending or rearranging in-person sessions can become a headache.

3. Accessibility: The location and set up of counselling spaces are very different from one to another, which means not all will be equipped for physical accessibility; maybe they have steps and no ramp, or the layout inhibits movement with its narrow hallways or irregularly arranged furniture.

The Convenience of Online Counselling

Remote therapy has been around for a long time, it can be traced back to the early 1900’s via letter writing with Sigmund Freud, the 1950’s by telephone with Leon, J. Saul, online in the 1980’s with Dear Uncle Ezra, and the mental health text messaging services in the 1990’s. However, it’s only since the covid-19 pandemic that online counselling has become increasingly popular. Here’s a look at some of the reasons why:

1. Accessibility: One of the standout benefits of online counselling is that it opens doors for many who might otherwise struggle to find help. Whether you’re in a remote area, unable to travel due to mobility issues or experience conditions like agoraphobia, you can connect with a qualified counsellor from the comfort of your home.

2. Convenience and Flexibility: Online counselling allows for more flexibility in scheduling. You can often find counsellors who offer appointments outside of traditional working hours, which can accommodate busy lifestyles or unexpected changes in your routine.

3. Comfortable Setting: Being in your own space can sometimes make it easier to open up. Whether you prefer sitting in your living room or lying on your bed, the comfort of your surroundings can create a relaxed atmosphere that encourages honesty and vulnerability.

Despite its many advantages, there are also some challenges with online counselling.

1. Technical Issues: Let’s be honest—technology isn’t always as friendly as we’d like. Internet issues, software problems, or even phone battery failures can interrupt sessions and leave you feeling frustrated. It’s always good to have a backup plan!

2. Limited Connection: While online sessions often work well, the lack of in-person interaction can sometimes make it harder to establish a deep connection with your counsellor. You might miss the nuances that come with physical presence, like a reassuring touch or a supportive gesture.

3. Privacy Concerns: We want to feel safe discussing personal matters. While many online platforms are secure, the thought of vulnerabilities around digital privacy can sometimes cause unease. It’s essential to find a reputable service that prioritises your confidentiality. Privacy also comes in the form of others; it is important that you hold your remote session in a room away from other people and, ideally, both you and your counsellor wear headphones to protect from disruptions and being overheard.

Finding the Right Fit for You

So, which option is the best for you? It often comes down to personal preference and individual circumstances. If you thrive on personal interactions and enjoy the environment of a therapy office, face-to-face counselling may be the way to go. However, if you value convenience and accessibility, especially in today’s busy world, online counselling might be your best bet.

Ultimately, the most important thing is to seek help in a way that feels comfortable and supportive. It’s perfectly okay to try both methods to see which one resonates with you.
